“When the Cupboard Feels Empty: Holding on to Hope and Helping Hands”

This season has brought new challenges for many families. With food assistance reduced and food banks stretched thin, some are facing the heartbreaking choice between paying rent or putting food on the table. As Thanksgiving approaches, a time that’s meant for gratitude and gathering, many hearts are instead filled with worry.

If you’re in that place today — unsure how to make it through the week — please know this: God still sees you. He hasn’t forgotten your name, your needs, or your prayers. The same God who multiplied a small lunch of loaves and fish is still in the business of multiplying provision.

“The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.” – Psalm 34:18

Even when the shelves look bare, God’s faithfulness remains full. His help doesn’t always come in the ways we expect — sometimes it’s through a neighbor sharing what little they have, a church pantry that still has a few boxes left, or a stranger who quietly leaves groceries at a doorstep. Hope doesn’t vanish when resources get low; it shows up through people who care.

For those of us who are able, this is our moment to step forward.

  • Share a meal.

  • Donate a few cans.

  • Volunteer an hour.

  • Check in on a family you know may be struggling.

Your small act of compassion might be the very prayer someone else has been whispering. We are the hands and feet of Christ in times like these — a living reminder that no one is truly alone when love leads the way.

“And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up.” – Galatians 6:9

As we move toward Thanksgiving, may we hold tightly to gratitude for what we have and open our hearts to those who have less. Together, we can bring light to a table that might otherwise feel dark — one meal, one prayer, one act of love at a time.

✨ Reflection:

  • How can I be God’s hands in my community this week?

  • When have I seen God provide through unexpected people or moments?
